W-8BEN Tax Form Guide

If you're a non-US trader, most US-based prop firms require a W-8BEN form before your first payout. It's a simple IRS form that certifies your foreign status — don't let it delay your withdrawal.

What Is the W-8BEN?

The W-8BEN (Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding) is an IRS form that non-US individuals submit to avoid 30% US tax withholding on their income from US sources.

Without W-8BEN:

The firm withholds 30% of your payout for US taxes.

$5,000 payout → $3,500 received

With W-8BEN:

If there's a tax treaty, withholding drops to 0-15%.

$5,000 payout → $4,250-$5,000 received

How to Fill It Out

1

Line 1: Name

Your full legal name exactly as it appears on your passport or ID. Must match your prop firm account name.

2

Line 2: Country of citizenship

Your country of citizenship (e.g., 'United Kingdom', 'Germany', 'Japan'). Use the full country name, not abbreviations.

3

Line 3: Permanent address

Your home address in your country. Include street, city, state/province, postal code, and country.

4

Line 6: Tax ID number

Your local tax ID number (e.g., UK National Insurance number, German Steuer-ID). If your country doesn't issue one, you can leave it blank.

5

Line 9: Tax treaty claim

Check if your country has a tax treaty with the US. If yes, enter your country name and the applicable treaty article. This reduces withholding from 30% to 0-15%.

6

Signature & Date

Sign and date the form. It's valid for 3 years from the date of signature. Most firms accept electronic signatures.

Common Mistakes

  • Name mismatch — Your W-8BEN name must exactly match your prop firm account name
  • Wrong form — W-8BEN is for individuals. If you trade through a company, you need W-8BEN-E
  • Expired form — W-8BEN expires after 3 years. Set a reminder to renew it
  • Missing tax treaty claim — Always check Line 9. Without it, you'll pay the full 30%
  • Submitting too late — Fill it out before requesting your first payout, not after
