Tradovate Setup Guide
Tradovate is a web-based futures platform that works directly in your browser — no download needed. It's the easiest way to start trading with most futures prop firms.
Why Tradovate?
Web-Based
Trade from any browser. No installation, no compatibility issues. Works on Mac, Windows, and Chromebook.
Free Platform
No platform fees with most prop firms. Some firms include free CME data through Tradovate.
Simple Interface
Clean, modern UI that's less overwhelming than NinjaTrader. Good for beginners who want to focus on trading, not software configuration.
Connecting to Your Prop Firm
Get your credentials
After purchasing an evaluation, your prop firm will email you Tradovate login credentials (username + password). This is separate from your prop firm dashboard login.
Log in to Tradovate
Go to trader.tradovate.com. Enter the credentials from step 1. Select 'Demo' or 'Simulation' mode (prop firm accounts show as simulation even though they're real evaluations).
Verify connection
Check the bottom status bar — it should show your account name and 'Connected'. Your buying power and position limits will match your evaluation plan.
Set up your charts
Add ES (E-mini S&P 500) or NQ (E-mini Nasdaq) to your watchlist. Set chart timeframe to 5min or 15min. Add basic indicators if needed (VWAP, EMA).
Essential Settings
Order Defaults
- ✅ Set default quantity to 1 contract
- ✅ Enable order confirmation dialogs
- ✅ Set default stop loss (bracket orders)
- ✅ Enable flatten-on-close for EOD rules
Risk Protection
- ⚠️ Set daily loss limit alert
- ⚠️ Set max position size limit
- ⚠️ Enable auto-flatten before market close
- ⚠️ Turn off one-click trading until comfortable
Data fees: Some prop firms include CME market data in your account. Others require you to purchase separately ($135/month for real-time CME data). Check your firm's rules before trading — delayed data will cause order rejections.
